Electronic Library Exercises.

The library is suitable for children aged 9 or older. Start a child on any Level 3 title and select Chapter 1. Demonstrate the fact that touching the spacebar moves the word focus along and that touching any letter key, causes the word in focus to be voiced. Touching the letter key a number of times, causes the voicing to be repeated. On completion of the initial read-through, the programme conducts the child through a second reading because all intelligent people, when required to read a passage aloud to someone, always pre-read the passage TWICE before reading it aloud.

Children must be taught that the purpose of the computer preparation is so that they will be able to read the passage to an adult, with few if any errors.

Children must learn to use the library without adult intervention or direct supervision. Any adult intervention, interferes with the reading process which is an anti-social, receptive activity. The time to praise and encourage the child is when s/he is reading the passage from the printout.

The library exercises secure two important advantages.

1. They quickly restore the child's self-confidence.

2. They exponentially extend the child's sight vocabulary and sight vocabulary is the basis of reading fluency.

In all my research trials, no child who completes twenty or more titles in the first term of the academic year will achieve lower than Level 4 in the following Key Stage 2 test.
